I am the guy that drilled the holes on a stock muffler. I am older than 35 (63). I drilled two 1/2 inch holes, centered in the two wide spaces and two 3/8 holes centered in the two narrow spaces.
The sound is not loud or annoying. It is more of a chug, chug, chug and really has a nice idle melody. I use a .050 diameter main jet, have 10,000 miles with no color to the pipe or muffler. I repeat NO COLOR (bright chrome)! The cycle runs great with a top speed of about 90mph.
J.C. Whitney mufflers are loud and illegal. Also they turn brown on a Savage.
The muffler on a Savage is not a consideration for emission control only noise control
